Studies on the Infection of Virus in Garlic , Allium sativum L. in Korea

Abstract
The present studies were executed to investigate the virus infection status of garlics (Allium sativum) grown in Korea and to device a measure for production of virus-free stocks. The survey at 50 sites of 20 locations revealed that all the garlics were infected with virus although the degrees of infection were different by regions. Northern type garlics showed only mild mosaic symptom whereas Southern type garlics showed severe malformation by infection of virus. Virus-free stocks were feasible to obtain among the individuals grown from the bulblets. Bioassay confirmed that the calluses and plantlets obtained by the tissue culture (leaf apex 0.5§®) were free from virus infection, Chenopodium amaranticolor found to be the best among the indicator plants used for bioassay of virus. Through electron microscope, two types of viruses, 600¡680§¬ (S-type) and 850¡880§¬ (L-type) in length, were observed in garlics grown in Korea. Garlics infected with L-type virus appeared mosaic symptom, those infected with S-type were symptomless, whereas those infected with both types of viruses showed very severe symptom resulting in malformation. Northern type garlics and Southern type garlics are considered to be tolerant and susceptible, respectively, to the viruses.
